We believe that murals are the most antique known form of
media, widely used long before the writing, not only as an
expression of the art of a time, but most of the times as
a medium of communicating ideas, events, testimonies and even
prophecies.
Also in decorative art, the murals, as elements of decoration
and adaptation to a new environment, are present much longer
before what we know as modern civilization. |

At approximately the age of Enlightenment, the concept of
‘work of art’ appears the way we know it today:
paintings in smaller canvases, which noblemen could order
and take to their homes, individualizing, thus the Painting
and causing the art of murals to partially lose its collective
social function.
But the Mural has remained alive for all those years. Many
artists have used mural painting to express themselves, such
as Leonardo da Vinci, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Michaelangelo,
Raphael, Claude Monet, and Candido Portinari, among others.
Contrary to paintings which compose the environment and much
stronger than panels which complete the environment, we can
say that modern muralism render theme to the environment.
It is no longer a matter of smoothing spaces but influencing
them, creating the theme proposed by the decorator. All the
decoration is made in accordance to its theme.
In this particular point, Jefferson Cabral is acknowledged
as one of the greatest artists in this technique, as it can
be seen in a mural painted in a garage, transforming the environment
into a cozy living room. |
